Physical and Chemical Change

Explore the difference in physical and chemical changes in matter.  

1. Reversible and Irreversible Changes (BBC):

  • Follow the instructions to complete this virtual lab.
  • If you need help reading, choose the speaker icon.
2. The Mixtures Lab (Harcourt):
  • Find the correct tool that will separate the substances that are part of each mixture.
  • On the chart indicate which separation mechanism and physical properties were used to separate the substances.
3.  Kitchen Chemistry (PBS):
  • In the virtual kitchen, find seven clues and write them down to help you remember.
  • Once you have found all the clues, press the red arrow.
  • In the lab, mix each substance with cabbage juice to decide if it is a base, neutral or acid.
  • Then launch the cork rocket experiment to see if the substance mixed with baking soda makes carbon dioxide.
  • On the last page, choose the pattern that you discovered about acids, bases, or neutrals.
4. GEMS Alien Juice Bar:

Challenge 1:    
  • Drag the cup of cabbage juice over each beverage and see to which color it changes.
  • Drag each liquid to the correct shelf above; Acid, Neutral, or Base.
  • Choose “Check me” to see if you are correct.
  • Continue to sort the liquids until you are correct and the aliens have a dance party.
Challenge 2:
  • Drag cabbage juice up to the shelf to combine with a liquid to test its pH.
  • Choose the correct liquid to satisfy your customer and drag it to the glass.
  • Your goal is to keep your customers happy.
Challenge 3:
  • Click on “What is pH” to learn about the pH scale numbers.
  • Follow directions to serve the customers the correct drink, with the correct pH level.
