STEM Beyond the Classroom

In this workshop, students and families explore how to bridge student interests with STEM careers and link STEM concepts to real-world learning.

Do you like to take things apart to see how they work? Do you want to help people? Do you enjoy creating things or solving problems? This workshop provides a fun opportunity for students to see themselves in a variety of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers! Students and families learn how to bridge students’ interests with careers they might not have thought about (like a psychologist, hydrologist, or designer!) – and link STEM concepts to real world learning. Families gain a view into what their students are learning in class and can encourage the development of STEM skills that students are already learning at home and at school.

More than Googling: Tips for Online Research

This workshops supports students and families develop skills and knowledge to discern high-quality, safe resources online and work together using tech tools.

With so much learning online, students are often asked to find learning resources on their own. We know that the internet is full of conflicting and misleading information, yet it can be tempting to click on the first link that shows up in a Google search. Having the skills and knowledge to discern high-quality, safe resources online can make a difference for students’ learning. In this workshop, students and families learn how to determine which online resources are best to use. Families gain familiarity with the tech tools their students are using and work together through a fun, collaborative experience using Google Slides.

Planning for the Future

This workshop gives students (and families) the opportunity to reflect on their interests and think through what they can do now to work toward long-term goals.

All families and students have aspirations for their future. But it can seem stressful and overwhelming to find a clear path from where students are to where they want to be. This workshop gives students (and families) the opportunity to reflect on their interests and values and think through what they can be doing now to work toward long-term goals. In this workshop, families gain insight into the specific types of activities and guidance they can provide to students (beyond just “getting good grades”) as well as a set of conversation starters for students and families to talk about their aspirations and action plan.

Brain Based Strategies to Boost Student Motivation

This workshop provides strategies for families to support children's motivation in school and beyond.

When students are motivated, you will see them take control of their own learning. Student motivation is also closely linked to cognition, participation, and attendance. How can families support children’s motivation in school and beyond? This workshop provides families with an accessible understanding of what happens in the brain when a person is motivated as well as techniques to recognize and encourage intrinsic student motivation and growth mindset. Families leave with suggested language and resources to support their child in a way that puts them in the driver’s seat of their own learning.
